A pleasant surprise
Over the past several years I've purchased two items for which I didn't have much hope, but which turned out to be very useful: one was this GM6000. I've had it about a week now, making a dozen different flavors of frozen dessert, including melon, strawberry, coffee, and red wine. Yes, red wine. We prefer Malbec but any good red will do. The machine is easy to operate; the formulas are simple, which is good since the documentation is obviously not written by anyone whose first language is American English, or maybe even English. After a little study you will find that the basic formula is a cup of flavor (pulped fruit, wine, coffee), a cup of dairy (milk, cream, yogurt), some sweetener, and maybe a bit of lemon juice. The book calls for a cup of sugar; we think a third cup is plenty. Play around. It's easy. Takes about 40 minutes, start to finish.
And, oh yes, the other was a Presto 03430 Pizzazz Pizza Oven. Used weekly, it has done a fine job for over four years. Much to my wife's pleasant surprise.
Worked Once and Quit
Unfortunately, I am writing a negative review for this product. After doing extensive research into ice cream makers, the positive reviews on this one and the fact that we own a DeLonghi DSM 7 mixer which we absolutely love (and also purchased from Amazon), we ordered this machine. The machine came promptly but we were somewhat concerned about how it was packaged upon arrival. It came in the original box inside a larger box but with a lot of room to "migrate" during shipping. The delivery man left it outside the house on its side - not a good sign for the future operation of its compressor. However, we set everything up as per the manual, made our first batch of gelato using the enclosed recipe book, and absolutely loved the result!!!!
The next evening, I made the strawberry sorbet from the recipe book in preparation for a dinner party. I poured the prepared mixture into the machine in anticipation of a yummy dessert but the machine did not turn on - no noise, no rumbles, no indication that it even had a motor. No dessert for the dinner party... Thinking it was maybe an operational error, we tried the next day to see if the machine would work. We called DeLonghi directly to inquire and the girl on the other end asked if we had used "rum"???? to "oil" the post where the bowl inserts as per the manual instructions and was generally not very helpful... Well, there was no such direction in the manual. We decided to return the machine to Amazon and they have already issued the refund. We did not try another machine because of other negative reviews we have since found about other machines. It seems that it might be a "hit or miss" situation with all these machines - even the very high end ones. So we are not sure we want to take the chance again.
Sooooo disappointed - but Amazon was great as usual!
Great Gelato, flimsy paddle
OK, First off, 5 Stars for the gelato, 3 Stars for the crappy paddle so it evens out at 4 stars.
I purchased the Cuisinart ICE-50 AND the Delonghi GM6000 within a couple of days of each other - mainly because the Delonghi went on sale for $150 at Williams Sonoma after I had already purchased the Cuisinart.
Noise: Makes about the same noise as the 'bowl in the freezer' Cuisinart ice cream machines - not too loud.
My primary concern with a home machine is the consistency of the end product. It needs to have zero perceptible ice crystals (otherwise one can buy a lot of premium gelato/ice cream from the store for the price of this machine) and I'm happy to say, this machine delivers on that promise. The consistency of the gelato when done, is like stiff soft serve. It has a few ice crystals when you stop the machine, but by the time you serve them out into bowls and take them out to the table, the gelato is super smooth.
The problem with this machine is the mechanics around the paddle/dasher. Delonghi could have easily put a tripping mechanism to stop the machine once the gelato was 'done', but they didn't. The net result is that it is relatively easy to break the plastic paddle by starting with a very cold mix (which I guess is like letting the machine run too long).
Having said that, spare paddles are about $4.50 at "delonghi-accessories" website with $12 shipping for up to 5 paddles (get 5 as you may break more than a couple of paddles over the lifetime of this machine). I wish they had packed the machine with 2 paddles so we could have continued to make gelato instead of waiting to get a replacement in the mail.
(Maybe it time to open up the Cuisinart :-) )
You also get a little plastic spatula with the machine, but you should just throw that away and use another non-metallic utensil to get the gelato out of the bowl (I use a silicone spatula and it works perfectly). I'd have preferred an extra paddle instead of the spatula.
Unlike the Cuisinart, the Delonghi lid, paddle and bowl are dishwasher safe (top-rack) - and that was the main reason why I opened the Delonghi before the Cuisinart.
DeLonghi Gelato Maker
All I can say is I really like it so far. I have been making all kinds of different recipes. It does make only a small amount just under 3 cups but since I am a widow living alone it is more than enough for me and then I get to try a different concoction when I quickly finish the last batch. So far it freezes my mixtures up a lot faster than they say it will take. And I do recommend it. But you do need a large space out of the way for it to set and do its thing.
plastic paddle problems
After reading so many positive reviews about this gelato machine, I am disappointed to be one of the few giving it a low rating. The plastic paddle for the machine had an irregular edge that was fraying plastic. That is the way it came. I never used the machine. The rest of the machine appeared to be of good quality. So I returned it and ordered another one. The paddle on the second one had the same defects but even worse condition with fraying plastic edge. Not being fond of the idea of little fragments of plastic in my gelato, I returned this one as well and gave up. I sent an email to the company to inform them of a possible manufacturing defect in their process of making the paddle. Personally, I wish they would just make the paddle stainless steel and charge a little more for it--I would pay more in order to not have plastic contacting my gelato. I did not hear any reply from them. Anybody else have a problem with the paddle? It is a shame since it seems like a nice machine.
